In May of 2009, two grade one & two teachers, from the Perth Avenue Public School came with their classes, to visit our community garden and to plant some Lettuce and flowers. They came back in June to have a look at the growth of the lettuce and have a picnic salad with the lettuce.

In the fall of that year, the two teachers, Tamalee Douglas, and Trish Dueck decided to join the community garden and received plot #4. They carfully weeded it as best as they could and got it ready for planting for the 2010 season. When the other classes found out about the garden plot, the all started to grow seedling in their classroom window ledges!

In the spring of 2010 the different classes came and took turns weeding and planting beans, corn, winter and summer squash, as well as tomatoes, and peppers, some dinosaur kale, cauliflower, and some herbs. From the previous year of gardening there were some "Sun Chokes" also know as Jerusalem Artichokes that came up and filled the edge of the garden with beautiful green stalks, that will soon have bright sunflower like blossom on them.

There had been the question of who would take care of the garden during the summer months, but several of the children and their parents stepped up to the plate and came regularly to water, and to get some of the produce. One mom was hesitant about taking the green squash, had never cooked a fresh squash before, but with some encouragement, took it, and told me later that it came out beautifully and she really enjoyed it, the kale had the same story, with the parent cooking it for the first time.

During the summer the children came on their own, and with their parents to care for the garden plot. They were really happy to have some of the vegetables that they helped grow, and could now put onto the dinner table!

Echinacea, These flowers grew in plot #4.
