Tomatoes And The Blossom End Rot

This is a condition that tomatoes sometimes suffer. It is not a viral or bacterial disease. It is not caused by any insects or other pests. Even if the tomatoes is ruined by the rot, you can still save the seeds, it will not affect the new plants.

The winter of 2006/2007 was pretty dry, we didn't get very much snow. The spring and early summer were beautiful sunny days...but no rain.

Tomatoes love the sun, but they also need even, consistent, rain or watering. Some of the gardeners had problems with blossom end rot this year, because they weren't able to come often enough to keep the tomatoes happy and we had so little rain. Technically, it starts as a problem with not enough calcium, and you can lay crushed raw (not boiled) egg shells around the base of the tomatoes, over the roots of the plant to rescue the rest of the crop, but the best therapy is regular watering.
